Deb can also help with your packet getting notarized.  debbie@debbiehudgens.com

Boutique Elegante is a classy sole proprietorship that was enduring a massive slow-down in business when it was discovered someone hacker her yelp and Facebook page and made it show the business was permanently closed, completely untrue. Republican Women of Reno took the elderly owner, Terri O’Brien, under their wing, promoted her business, took up  donations and helped Terri save her business. Boutique Elegante is now having a sale for her winter fashions at 50% off sale until Sat, March 2.  Located at 3350 Lakeside Ct (just north of Moana), the fashions are unique, comfortable and attractive. Please stop by.

Joni Hammond – talked about events RWR has coming up:

March 14 monthly luncheon, great speaker Robert Beadles

March 25 – AI class at Atlantis, 10:00-2:00pm, $25 includes lunch.

March 5 – Taco Tuesday, Taco’s Tijuana Cantina, 7499 Longley

Janet Butcher – Jeff Church is holding a Town Hall meeting at Raleys, Wedge Pkwy & Mt Rose Hwy, 6:00pm on Tuesday, March 5.

DISCUSSION

School Board Update – Roger Edwards talked about several concerned citizens were told to leave the meeting of 2/27. One was trying to read from a particularly sexually graphic book that is in our school libraries and was tossed out before she could finish. It’s not OK to read aloud from a sexually graphic book in an adult meeting, but it’s OK to make the book available in the school libraries. The budget showed a $1.7M deficit and the big push is for 3 meals a day for all students (from President Alexis Hill). They lost 1100 students this past year.

Graeme Reid – former candidate for School Board, introduced Josh Cole, candidate for School Board D (held by Beth Smith) and Chris Tabarez. There are 4 openings in the School Board. School Board races are non-partisan and anyone who wins the primary with 50% +1 vote can win without a General election. Eddie Lorton is the Candidate Recruiter for the Washoe County GOP and Graeme is the recruiter for the School Board. District D (Beth Smith) is a tough district and Graeme brings to us two candidates, Josh Cole and Christopher Tabarez who are competing against Beth Smith.

Josh Cole – running for School Board District D, from Huffaker to the mountains. He’s running because of his son. Classrooms are being evacuated because of safety concerns. He’s had meetings with Superintendent Enfield, and several other senior officials and they said they know about the problem, but they couldn’t (wouldn’t) tell him anything more. We need to make the schools safe. We have continued to lower standards to boost the graduation rate. Unfortunately, the State Board of Education dictates curriculum for all the counties’ Boards of Trustees. Losing teachers with 15-19 yrs of service, leaving before their pension kicks in. www.votejoshcole.com to learn more about Josh, his story and platform.

Christopher Tabarez – currently works at Wooster HS. He sees the problems in the schools every single day. We need to focus on academics, financial awareness and how to interact with the police dept. No one really cares to do the right thing until doing the right thing is in the power position. Jeff Church votes the right way every time and is outvoted 6-1 every time. Parents must start waking up. Parents don’t know. You can tell them, but they don’t believe it. When you can Wshow them, masses of parents show up, then the Sch Bd will have to listen. We are graduating students without the skills to live life. The system removes the barriers so they can succeed. In the real world, barriers are constantly beW ake the voting laws stronger. Against rank-choice voting, in favor of 2nd Amendment. If the drug problem were taken care of, we could handle the homeless problem.

From Victoria Myer: (Victoria was not present at CTL, but this was emailed to Carole and I  felt it important enough to pass along).

There are 4 seats on the Washoe County School Board that will be up for grabs in the primary?  Anyone getting 51% or more of votes wins! They do not have to compete in the general election

WE NEED PEOPLE TO RUN. Is this board seat something you might sit in? Please consider running in the primary. We need good people to run our school board.

Here are the districts where we have openings:

Jeff Church has stated he isn’t running but the candidate filing date isn’t until March 4-15. The other incumbents will most likely run and we need candidates in each district to run against them. The application process is simple. File in person between March 4 and 15 at the Registrar of Voters 2024 Candidate Filing (washoecounty.gov) and it is $30 for the application.

The board meets only twice a month.

Is this something you can do? Is this a way you can contribute to the betterment of the future of our kids’ schools here in Washoe County? Please consider throwing your hat into this arena. We can change the direction of this county!  If you have questions, send them along and I’ll do my best to get you accurate answers. Thank you!  Victoria Myer, vwmyer@gmail.com

Terisia Kolesnick – Assembly 24 (downtown/midtown) – Married, has 5 children, 9 grandchildren, born-again Christian, conservative Republican. Our opinions are being censored, our constitutional rights are being crushed. The world we grew up in no longer reflects the current reality. Make the voting laws stronger. She is against rank-choice voting, in favor of 2nd Amendment. If the drug problem were taken care of, we could handle the homeless problem. www.Teri4nevada.com

Marsha Berkbigler – former County Commission 1, against Alexis Hill – What happened with letting the people know what their government is doing? That escapes her; it wasn’t like that when she was a Commissioner. They had their issues, but they talked to each other. The current Commission doesn’t care about what they do with our money. The collective County spent $24M on food and services for the homeless (not even including the Cares Campus). Maybe 150 homeless people are in Washoe. County probably has 1500 seniors who rely completely on government subsidies, where only $9M was available for them. Her phone has rung off the hook for the last 1.5 yrs with people urging her to get back on the Commission. She believes Library Director Jeff Scott needs to go. Marsha grew up in politics. Her father was a teamster’s union steward in MI. She took $$ from some developers, but that doesn’t mean one has to do exactly what they want. Now developers are not supporting her because she didn’t do exactly what they wanted when she was a Commissioner.

Nicholas St Jon – Washoe Patriots. Working on the rank-choice voting issue. He’s put together a survey about Question 3, which is likely two questions, rather than 1 question and perhaps we can get that issue knocked off the ballot. It really is two issues.

Schayden Gorai – Turning Point Action. Quick update: TPA is doing a ballot chasing initiative here in Washoe. A Republican women’s club has asked for a training. There was a 3-hour training on how to use the TPAction app and what to say and how to interact with those folks who want to help chasing ballots (i.e. getting folks to vote). They are making a big push to get the Christian and Catholic churches to get involved. Getting the Moms with kids in schools to help as well.

Bruce Parks – Chair of the Washoe County Republican Party – County Convention, Saturday, March 9, all day. If you aren’t a delegate or an alternate, call the County Party office (775-827-1900), you can still attend as a guest. We have a new platform and it’s important to be there. Great candidates, but it doesn’t matter if we don’t show up to the polls. Republican Party turn-out in Washoe County is pitiful. Talk to friends, family and neighbors. There are a lot of wonderful people who gave their lives to give us the right to vote. Not voting is spitting in the eye of those who have sacrificed. We are being ruled by tyrants. There’s only one way to fix it – SHOW UP!

Next Meeting – Wednesday, March 13, same time, same place.
